The Department of Physical & Computer Sciences (PCS) is dedicated to teaching and research in the physical sciences and technology. It offers:
- Baccalaureate of Science Degree (BS) in Computer Science.
- Associate of Science Degree (AS) in Computer Science.
The mission of the Department is to prepare students for challenging entry-level jobs in computer science and applied sciences, as well as for graduate programs in atmospheric science, physical science, education, and computer science. Accordingly, the Department focuses on the following goals:
- to develop in our students high-level skills, such as problem-solving, reasoning, and research capabilities;
- to prepare students for graduate study in Computer Science, and B.S. programs in Physics and Engineering;
- to prepare students to compete for well-paying positions in the applied and computer sciences;
- to prepare students to create their own position in society (e.g. consulting, entrepreneurship) regardless of the economic climate.
Students in the Department must pass all departmental required courses with a grade of “C” or better.
NASA Atmospheric/Ocean and Environmental Science Research Program is a collaboration between PCS and GISS. The campus-based research program provides internships for undergraduate students.
The PCS department serves as a NASA NY State Space Grant Affiliate providing research opportunities and internships for undergraduate students.
CUNY 2X Tech Program
The CUNY 2X Tech @ MEC (https://www.mec.cuny.edu/cuny2xtechmec/) is a program that aims at building Medgar Evers College’s capacity to adopt an educational model that will (1) increase student academic success within the Computer Science (CS) and Computer Information Systems (CIS) majors and (2) prepare students for careers in software engineering. Students that participate in the program benefit from mentoring, career coaching, summer programs, and placement in internships.
The Computer Science Program
The Computer Science Program at Medgar Evers College prepares students with the core theoretical and applied knowledge, incorporating national computer science curriculum standards required for a professional or research career in a dynamic and evolving discipline. The program follows the guidelines of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Computer Society of The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE- CS) Joint Curriculum Task Force, and combines rigorous academic study with the opportunity for a hands-on experience.
Students enrolled in the Computer Science Program are provided with a strong mathematics, science, and core computer science background. The B.S. Degree Program in Computer Science offers elective courses in the areas of Networking, Computational Science, Mobile and Web Development, Artificial Intelligence, and Security. An important component of the Computer Science Program is the requirement for student internships and/or undergraduate research to develop the skills and expertise needed for success in industry and graduate school. The A.S. Degree in Computer Science is awarded to students who successfully complete the first two years of the B.S. Degree requirements in Computer Science. Dr. Rosa Zavala is the Coordinator of the Computer Science Program.
Graduates of the Computer Science program have obtained employment at Google, Lockheed Martin, BP, Bloomberg, Amazon, Oracle, Booz Allen Hamilton, Nanotronics, and other companies in the NYC tech eecosystem.
